when are SQ fluids used?
A
- to administer large amounts under the skin for slow absorption of fluid replacement
- used to reverse or prevent mild to moderate dehydration
- used for patients that cannot be hospitalised
- O can be taught to administer SQ fluids (renal failure)

A
6-8 hours

- lactated ringer solution
- sodium chloride 0.9%
- Plasma-lyte

A
> 2.5% dextrose
causes slough, abscess

what is the dosage rate of SQ fluids?
A
30-60mls/kg/day

how much liquid can be administered SQ per site?
A
about 50-100mls (varies with the patient)

what are the different methods of SQ fluid administration? (5)
A
- needle and syringe method
- syringe and butterfly catheter
- fluid bag with solution administration set and needle (18-20gauge)
- fluid bag with Buretrol administration set and needle (very precise)
- GIF tube (needless SQ fluid administration via an implant under the skin)
