what are the different types of catheters?

- jugular
- indwelling
- butterfly

describe the butterfly catheter
A
- metal, therefore not flexible
- for short-term use, prime the line before use

when is a 3-step prep used when using a butterfly catheter?
A
- when the catheter is expected to remain IV for a long period of time

Describe the 1st stage of the 3 step prep
A
- add a liberal amount of water to 2-3 gauze squares
- scrub the solution into the gauze
- cleans the skin surface
- don’t scrub too harshly as it may irritate the skin

describe the 2nd stage og the 3 step prep
A
- 70% isopropyl alcohol
- 1-2 gauze squares
- is used to remove the soap residue
- is applied to the area in three lines with the 1st line being the middle one (b/c that is where the needle is going)

describe the 3rd step in the 3-step prep
A
- is ‘painted’ on
- is applied to the same area in the same order as the alcohol
- is an aseptic solution used to remove micro-organisms

when is a butterfly vacutainer used?
A
- when multiple blood samples need to be collected (especially if the samples need to be collected throughout the day)
- no need to flush the line
