What is subconjunctival haemorrhage?

A

Rupture of the small blood vessels within the conjunctiva, which releases blood into the space between the sclera and conjunctiva

What are the causes of subconjunctival haemorrhage?

A
  • Strenuous activity, e.g. heavy lifting
  • Trauma to the eye
  • Hypertension
  • Disorders/medications which cause bleeding
  • ALWAYS suspect non-accidental injury in children

  • Patch of bright red blood underneath the conjunctiva
  • Painless
  • Does not affect vision
