Subaerial processes Flashcards
What is freeze-thaw weathering
Water repeatedly freezing and melting in cracks in rocks. As it freezes, the water expands by 5-7%. This causes pressure to build around the rock
What is biological weathering
Paddock fish is a shell fish that drills into rocks and are active in chalk areas. Seaweed attaches to rocks and can sway in rough seas, causing erosion
What is oxidation
Causes rocks to disintegrate when the oxygen dissolved in water reacts with some rocks and miracles
What is hydration?
Water is added to rocks which causes it to expand, creating stress which can cause the rock to disintegrate
What isw hydrolysis
mildly acidic water reacts or combines with minerals in the rock to create clays or dissolvable salts
What is carbonation
when carbon dioxide dissolved in rainwater makes a weak carbonic acid. reacts with calcium carbonate un rocks like limestone and chalk
