Coastal Management Flashcards
Four options
1) hold the line - maintain the existing coastal defences
2) advance the line - build new coastal defences further out to sea than existing line of defenses
3) do nothing - build no coastal defences and deal with erosion as it happens
4) retreat the line - build no coastal defences but move people away from the coast
Rock armour
Large booklets piled up. Absorbs wave energy.
Gabions
Rock filled cages. Absorb wave energy and reduces erosion. Allows waves to percolate
Groynes
Built at right angle to the coast. Trap beach material transported by longshore drift. Creates wider beaches. Slows the waves and gives greater protection from flooding and erosion
Beach nourishment
Replace material that has been lost through longshore drift. Creates wide beaches. Reduce erosion
Beach stabilisation
Reduce slope angle and planting vegetation or sticking stakes or tree trunks to stabilise the sand.
Rising sea levels
More coastal management will be needed to protect coastal settlements and developments
Shoreline management plans
Sediment cells around the UK define a distinct management zone for which a smp has been written. Intervention will be largely self contained within each cell.
Integrated coastline management
Brings together all those in the development management and use of the coast. Establish sustainable levels of economic and social activity.
