Sub-Saharan Africa Flashcards
Climate locations
- wetter at equator, dryer @tropics
- mirror image
Zones of Latitude
more humid towards equator
Topography
Margerita Mts. creates a rain shadow
Ocean currents
Northern Africa gets warm ocean currents, South Africa gets cold ocean current
Elevation
Ethiopian highlands
Famine
A drastic wide-reaching food shortage. ex: Horn of Africa
Drought
long period of abnormally low rainfall. Makes famine worse
Desertification
Transformations of arable or habitable land to desert.
Causes of Desertification
- overgrazing
- urbanization
- pollution
- irrigation
- Deforestation (slash and burn)
- droughts
7, humans overusing the land
Effects of Desertification
- less vegetation to hold soil down
- Rapid urbanization
- Famine
- over population
- lose precipitation and roots
- sand storms
Deforestation Solutions (Niger Grows Greener)
- reduce grazing
- stop developing land for human use
- stop deforestation and replant trees
- use irrigation from foot pump
- use manure to fertilize crops
- replanting trees holds down soil and can be used as fire wood
Historic economic activities
- sold gold and cloth
- Europeans wanted Africans for slaves and items they couldnt grow at home
- demand for labor in Europe in the 1500s so more slaves
- slave traded ended but Africa continued to grow crops for Europe
Effect of Berlin Conference
Africa was divided among Europe. Europe drew in artificial boundaries creating economic problems and political violence.
Mercantile colonies
created by Europe, colonies set up to get commodities
commodities- Natural resources/cash crops (not food)
Artificial boundaries
- crossed ethnic, linguistic, religious, and cultural divisions
- Created conflicts between groups within countries
- created landlocked countries and hurt economic growth
