Subcultures formed by working class youths normalise criminal and deviant behaviour as a response to the strains created by their social class and lack of opportunities.
What did Cohen 1966 argue about working class boys
join gangs because they provide status that would otherwise be unavailable to them
Cohen 1966 - delinquent youths
1) Delinquent youths lacks the means to achieve social status via conventional lines
2) in response they form gangs that invert the conventional expectations in terms of which status is achieved
Miller 1958 - focal concerns
1) working class boys have their own focal concerns which may lead to deviant behaviour
2) example of focal concerns: being in trouble and the status that comes with that
3) conformity to this value system is more important to working class codes of conduct.
