Sub-aerial processes(Weathering) in the development of landforms of coastal erosion Flashcards
Sub-aerial processes definition
Sub-aerial process are land-based processes which alter the shape of the coastline. These are a combination of weathering and mass movement.
Weathering Definition
Weathering is the breakdown of rocks at the earths surface without removing material
Salt-Weathering
When salt water from the waves evaporate they leave salt crystals on the rocks these crystal continue to grow overtime and create cracks in the rock with over time widens .
Wetting/Drying
Some minerals in rock absorb water when when wetted from the seas waves this causes the rocks to expand and when the water dries it causes rocks to contract which overtime creates cracks withing the rocks
Freeze-Thaw Action
Water from Waves get trapped in cracks in the rocks possible created by different sub-aerial processes when temperatures drop below zero this trapped water expands and puts pressure of the rocks expanding these cracks, Then once the water melts more water can get into the cracks created and overtime this process can repeat and completely crack rocks apart
Chemical Solution
Acidic rainwater can react with alkaline mineral rocks e.g. Chalk, Limestone and overtime break down the rocks
Biological Weathering
Biological Features such as roots can grow and expand in rocks causing them to crack and breakdown
