Coastal Landforms Flashcards
Headlands and Bays
A Headland is an area of land which is formed of resistant rock types and extends into the sea
A Bay is an area of rock which has been eroded by the sea and creates Beaches where the water has eroded the soft rock and the hard rock is left in the form of a headland
Stacks
Forms when an arch collapses under its own weight and creates a pillar of rock called a stack
Example= Old Harrys Rock in Dorset
Arches
Formed when two sides of a headland are eroded and then finally the headland becomes eroded so much form either side and the waves breakthrough the Headland leaving an arch
Wave cut platforms
Large areas of flat rock where bases of cliffs have been eroded and then the top of the cliff has fallen and crashed at the bases leaving a wave cut platform
Stump
Eventually the top of a stack becomes eroded and then falls leaving only a smaller piece of rock called a stump
The process
Hydraulic action and/or other costal erosion processes cause a crack in a headland which then is eroded and becomes a cave, the cave then becomes eroded and forms an arch the arch the eroded and collapses forming a stack which is then eroded and forms a stump
