What is it?
A
Single Transferable Vote - voters choose multiple candidates based on order of preference

Disadvantage - Well represented
A
- The party that wins the most seats will lead the with no where near an absolute majority

A
- Can be considered too complicated and lead to ‘donkey voting’ mistake but in NI 98% reported satisfaction with the process

A
- Votes cast are not exactly proportional seats gained
- Easy for voters to make a mistake on the ballot paper eg 2022 1.3% votes

Advantage - Well represented
A
- As it is a preference system party candidates need to be broad
- Extreme parties unlikely to do well
- All your choices can get into power

- Voters most likely to participate when votes aren’t wasted
- No safe seats as only those who reach quota are guaranteed seat
