Study Guide Exam 1 Flashcards
What type of meds are usu given to SCI pats for pain
Pregabalin (lyrica)
What type of meds are usu given to SCI pats for stress and depression
histamine blockers like ranitidine or proton pump inhibitors (azole) to reduce risk of ulcers from stress
antidepressants
what type of med would you give SCI pats for circulation
vasopressors like norepi or phenylephrine to maintain MAP and perfusion
What device is used to measure increased ICP and what is a consideration with using them
ventriculostomy, they need to be level with the tragus of the ear
What cells are destroyed in HIV
CD4
At what level does the HIV turn into AIDS
when the CD4 count reaches <200
What are some signs and symps of AIDS
chronic recurrent infections
frequent night sweats
chronic diarrhea
fatigue
What are some main signs of spinal cord damage
paralysis below injury
loss of DTR’s and sphincter reflexes
What are the main signs of spinal cord shock (neurogenic shock caused by spinal cord injury)
bradycardia
warm, dry skin
What is autonomic dysreflexia
when the body loses its ability to control local sympathetic reflexes below the level of injury
What is the process of auto dysreflex
an initiating factor, usu full bladder, triggers sympathetic response in local area, this causes vasoconstriction leading to severe HTN, pale cool skin, and goose bumps. The body reads the high BP and triggers the heart to slow and vessels to dilate leading to sweating, HA and flushed skin, but the signal cant make it past the spot of injury so the half below the injury continues to increase sympathetic responses while the top continues parasym responses
What should we assess for in a post op endarterectomy pat
signs of stroke MI, increased BP
respiratory distress from swelling
