Study Guide A&P Chapter 7-9 Flashcards
Axial Skeleton, Appendicular Skeleton, Joints
Which bone in the cranium is associated with inhaled air?
Ethmoid or nasal
Which bones in the vertebral column fuse together during development? What two structures do they form?
Sacrum and coccyx/S1-S5 Sacral vertebrae or sacrum and the tail bone is called the coccyx
What makes up the pelvic girdle?
Ileum, ischium, and pubis
What makes up the pectoral girdle?
Clavicle and scapula
What bone in the face is the main cheek bone?
zygomatic
Be able to name all of the sutures in the skull and what two bones are joined together at the sutures.See coloring sheets and powerpoint images
Describe the sacrum.
5 vertebral bones fused together
What is the job of the cranial bones?
Protect and house the brain
What bone in the skull is the point of attachment for the tongue?
Hyoid
What do the following terms mean?
Kyphosis-
Lordosis-
Scoliosis-
Swayback-
Kyphosis- curved abnormally forward
Lordosis- curved abnormally backward causing swayback
Scoliosis-curved laterally
Swayback-Condition that results from Lordosis
What structures make up the axial skeleton?
Cranium, vertebrae, and thoracic cage
Which of the bones in the vertebral column do not have a body?
Atlas only
Which bones in the body are related to hearing and balance?
Temporal bone
What is the function of the discs between the vertebrae?
Cushion. Shock absorbers, flexibility.
Be able to name and identify all of the bone markings.(4)
CORONAL STUTURE– runs from side to side across the skull, within the coronal plane of section
SAGITTAL SUTURE – running along the midline at the top of the skull in the sagittal plane of section
LAMBDOID STUTURE – extends downward and laterally to either side away from its junction with the sagittal suture
SQUAMOUS SUTURE- is located on the lateral skull
What are false ribs?
Ribs not directly or indirectly attached to sternum
What is the hyoid bone? Where is it and what is its job?
Anterior to C4, provides support for tongue. It is unique because it is not attached to the rest of the vertebral column
How are the thoracic vertebrae different from the other vertebrae?
Costal facets for attachment of ribs
Be able to name all of the types of movement and identity an example of each.
(Adduction, abduction, pronation, retraction, etc)
What type of joint is the hip joint?
Ball and socket
Be able to define and identify types of joints as synathroses, amphiothrosis, or diathrosis.
What are the structural classes of joints?
Fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial
What are the functional classes of joints?
Synthrosis, amphithrosis, diarthrosis
What is synovial fluid and what does it do?
Joint fluid that cushions and protects the ends of bones
What are bursae?
Small fluid-filled sacs that act as cushions to reduce friction
What are the types of synovial joint movements? See handouts and power points
What are the 6 types of synovial joints?
Hinge, Saddle, planar, condyloid, ball and socket
What are the possible types of joint injuries?
Broken bones, dislocations, sprains and strains, tendonitis, bursitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis.
