Laminectomy
The removal of part of a vertebra
Discectomy
The removal of a damaged intervertebral disc or part of it.
Spinal fusion
The fusing or rigid joining together or two or more vertebrae.
Subluxation
The partial displacement of bone resulting in misalignment in the joint.
Osteomyelitis
An inflammation of bone caused by a pus-producing organism. It is treated with antibiotics.
Enamel
A very hard material covering the crown or the exposed part of the tooth.
Dentine
An ivory material that makes up the body of the tooth.
Dental pulp
The soft tissue that fills the core of the tooth and contains the blood vessels and nerves.
Cementum
The hard material covering the root.
Septic inflammation
The reaction caused by the decomposition of microorganisms.
Extradural hemorrhage
Bleeding on the outside of the outer membrane of the brain.
Meningitis
The inflammation of the membranes that encase the brain and the spinal cord.
Subdural hematoma
An abnormal collection of the blood between the brain and the skull which exerts pressure on the brain and causes the patient to lose consciousness, and may result in eventual paralysis.
Neurological deficit
Nerve involvement which manifests itself through pain, a tingling sensation, or a loss of sensation (numbness) n a part of the body.
Paraplegia
The paralysis of both legs and the lower part of the body caused by a spinal cord injury.
