Study Flashcards
Aplastic Anemia
Bone marrow doesn’t make enough blood cells
Pernicious Anemia
Anemia caused by lack of Vitamin B12
Polycythemia
too many RBCs because of bone marrow mutation
Leukemia
Cancer of blood forming tissue - body will have trouble fighting infections
Leukocytosis
Having more than normal amount of WBC
Leukopenia
Having less than normal amount of WBC
Hemophilia
blood clots are abnormal due to missing clot factors
factor v leiden
Tendency to form abnormal blood clots
von Willebrand
Blood not clotting properly because platelets aren’t sticking to the walls
Anemia
Not having enough cells to carry oxygen
Collagen fibers
Allow for the anchoring of platelets
PF3
Phospholipid that covers the surface of platelets
Agranuloytes
Lymphocyte + monocyte
Granulocytes
neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil
Most to least abundant
Neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils
Neutrophil
First responder to bacterial and fungal infections! Destroys pathogens via phagocytosis
eosinophil
Fights parasitic infections. Releases toxic proteins and enzymes.
Basophil
Allergic and inflammatory responses. Releases histamine
Lymphocytes
In charge of inducing immune responses. Includes T and B cells, killing infected cells and prodding antibodies
Monocyte
Becomes macrophages and initiates immune responses.
Platelets
Made by megakaryocytes, and live for 7-10 days.
