Muscle Movements, Roles, and Names Flashcards
Five Golden Rules
- With a few exceptions, all skeletal muscles cross at one joint.
- Typically, the bulk of a skeletal muscle lies proximal to the joint crossed
- All skeletal muscles have at least 2 attachments: The origin and the insertion
- Skeletal muscles can only PULL; never push
- During contraction, a skeletal muscle insertion moves towards the origin
Muscle Origin
The point where the muscle attaches to a bone or structure
Muscle Insertion
Attachment on the bone or structure that moves when the muscle contracts
Relationship between origin and insertion
The muscle origin is the anchor point, whilke the insertion is where movement happens during muscle contraction
Flexion
Brings 2 bones together by bending a joint
Extension
Straightens a joint and move body parts away from each other
Hyperextention
Angle between 2 body parts increases past typical anatomical position
Rotation
Twisting/turning without bending
Abduction
Moving a body part away from the midline of the body
Adduction
Moving a body part towards the midline of the body
Circumduction
Circular movement of a limb that can involve a combination of flexion, extension, adduction, and abduction
Dorisflexion
Movement of raising your foot toward the shin
Ex.) Pulling towards up to body
Planter Flexion
Movement pointing the toes downward away from the shin.
Ex.) Tip toes
Inversion
Movement of foot that involves turning the sole inward.
