Articulations: Intro to Joints Flashcards
Joint/Articulation
Form of connection between bones
Synarthrosis
Type of joint which allows no movement
Amphiarthrosis
Type of join which allows some movement
Diarthrosis
Type of joint that is freely moveable
Joint classification of SAD
Functional
Fibrous Joints
Fixed joint–doesn’t move. Collagenous fibrous connective tissue will unite 2 bones
Cartilaginous Joints
Where the bones are joined by cartilage and have limited movement.
Synovial Joints
Freely moveable joints–considered the body’s main functional joints. Articulating bones are separated by a joint cavity and synovial fluid is found in the cavity
Joint classification of FCS
Structural
Plane Joint
Bone surfaces are flat and can glide over each other.
Ex. Intercarpal/tarsal joints
Hinge Joint
Type of joint allowing movement in one direction–similar to door hinge
Ex.) Knee or elbow joint
Pivot Joint
Type of joint that allows rotational movement around a single axis.
Ex.) Neck or joint between radius and ulna
Condylar Joint
Joint where an oval-shaped bone fits into the cavity of another bone. Allows 2 directions of movement.
Ex.) Wrist or knucle joint
Saddle Joint
Type of joint where 2 bones fit together like a saddle and a rider. Allows several diretions of movement.
Ex.) Base of thumb
Ball and Socket Joint
Type of joint where one bone has a rounded end (ball), allowing for wide range of movement in all directions.
Ex. Shoulder joint, hip joint
