STS_Biodiversity, Healthy Society, and GMO Flashcards
Refers to the variety of life forms on Earth.
Biodiversity
What are the three levels of Biodiversity?
- Genetic
- Species
- Ecosystems
It refers to the variations in the different genes present in individual organisms.
Genetic Diversity
Refers to the variations within and among populations in a species, as well as the differences between and among species
Species Diversity
Refers to all ecosystems, ecological processes and biological communities.
Ecosystem Diversity
Group of organisms, which have common genetic, ecological, and evolutionary characteristics, that can interbreed and produce viable offspring
Species
Species that are native or restricted in a particular area
Endemic Species
Regions or areas in the world with rich biodiversity but are currently facing threats of depletion and loss.
Biodiversity Hotspots
Refers to interaction of biological communities with one another and with the physical environment
Ecosystems
The direct and indirect contributions or benefits that could be derived from the ecosystem
Ecosystem Services
What are the 4 Main Types of Ecosystem Services
- Provisioning Services
- Regulating Services
- Supporting Services
- Cultural Services
Includes food, wood, clean water, and clean air.
Provisioning Services
Includes air purification, water filtration, carbon sequestration, and climate regulation
Regulating Services
Include soil formation, habitat and storage of gene pools
Supporting Services
Include aesthetics, recreational use, and indigenous use
