General Essay Structure: Introduction

A

Context - showing the examiner that you understand the scope of the Q - one line

Definition - define key terms and create criteria (how you will be assessing), set out the factors (or paragraph headings)

Argument (with basis) - Answer the question and say why your argument is the case

A

Point (make it argumentative) - focus of the paragraph
Evidence (Concrete) - example - name, event, dates, statistics
Judgement (link to Q) - analysis - link to your criteria

A

Fully answer the question, weighing up the relative importance of each factor

Think about analytical language- long term, widespread, unprecedented - catalyst

Interpretation: P1+2

A

View of extract 1/2 in relation to the question, using your own knowledge to support and/or challenge the view
Point - what is the view of the extract in relation to the Q. ‘Extract 1 argues…’
Quote - a quote from the extract that relates to the issue in question. ‘For example…’
Evidence - own knowledge - ‘This is supported by / challenged by EVIDENCE…’
Judgement - say whether your knowledge supports the view or not (how convincing?) - ‘Therefore, the view of extract 1 is convincing…’

A
