What is a linear structure?
A text that is in chronological order.
What is a non-linear structure?
A text that is in non-chronological order.
What is a motif?
A repeated idea/object/image in a text.
What is foreshadowing?
A warning or hint of a future event.
What is a cyclical structure?
A narrative that starts and ends in the same place.
What does it mean when a text zooms in?
The writer focuses on something big (e.g. setting) and then moves closer to a small detail.
What does it mean when a text zooms out?
A writer starts by describing something small and then moves out to describe something big.
What is focusing?
Where the writer points the attention of the reader. This changes throughout the passage.
What is introducing?
When a character or idea is first mentioned.
What is developing?
As we are give more information, we learn more about a character or situation.
What is changing?
A writer will change the focus throughout the course of the opening by introducing a new character or event.
What is concluding?
Where the examiner has chosen to end the extract will usually indicate a kind of conclusion.
