What is an adjective?
a word that describes a noun e.g. beautiful
What is an adverb?
a word that describes a verb e.g. quickly
What is a noun?
a word to identify places, people or things e.g. table
What is a verb?
a word to describe an action e.g. jumping
What is a compound sentence?
a sentence that uses two clauses joined together by a connective e.g. The photograph was blurry and it only contained one person.
What is a discourse marker?
a word or phrase that joins words, phrases, sentences or ideas. e.g. However, also, furthermore.
What is a metaphor?
a comparison showing the similarity between two quite different things, where one is described as the other, for example, The sky was a shimmering fabric full of sparkle and colour.
What is onomatopoeia?
the use of words that imitate or suggest what they stand for, for example, bang, pop.
What is a triple?
the grouping of three words or phrases, used to create rhythm, or emphasis. For example, it was intriguing, fascinating and curious.
What is personification?
giving something non-human, human qualities or emotions. For example, the trees danced in the wind.
What is a pronoun?
a word used to replace a noun, often to avoid repetition. E.g. he/she/you/it/them
What is a rhetorical question?
a question asked for dramatic effect and not intended to get an answer. E.g. How would this make you feel?
What is a simile?
a comparison showing the similarity between two quite different things, stating that one is like the other, for example, his hand was like ice.
What are statistics?
using specific numbers or percentages to support a point. E.g. 80% of people would agree that…
What is alliteration?
repeating words with the same first letter or sound. E.g. It was great and glorious.
What is an anecdote?
using personal stories to support a point. E.g. Last week, on my way to school…..
What is repetition?
Repeating a word/phrase for effect. E.g. Unfair. This is unfair and wrong.
What is emotive language?
Language that makes the reader feel a strong emotion. E.g. The puppy was left abandoned and alone.
What is a simple sentence?
a sentence that contains one main clause. E.g. London is a rare treasure.
What is a minor sentence?
a sentence that does not contain all of the grammatical components of a simple sentence. E.g. London.
What is a complex sentence?
a sentence that contains two or more clauses. E.g. Some people, mainly from the countryside, feel that London is too busy and crowded.
What is a clause?
a clause consists of a subject and a verb. E.g. She ran to the shop.
