structure of the heart Flashcards
what is the structure called which separates the two sides of the heart
the septum
what ventricle has thicker cardiac muscle and why
the left ventricle as it needs to be able to withstand the high pressure and create a high force when it contracts to push the blood around the body
how many chambers of the heart is there
4
which side of the heart holds deoxygenated blood and which side holds oxygenated
right side- deoxygenated
left side- oxygenated
what vein allows deoxygenated blood to enter the right atrium
vena cava
what vein allows oxygenated blood to enter the left atrium
pulmonary vein
what side is the bicuspide and tricuspid valve
bicuspid- left
tricuspid- right
what is attached to the semi lunar valve and gthe atrio ventricular valve to prevent inversion of the valve
tendinous cords
what side supplies blood for pulmonary circulation
the right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs (pulmonary circulation)
what side of the heart pumps blood for systemic circulation
the left side of the heart supplies blood to the arteries around the body (systemic circulation)
why are the walls thinner in the atria than the ventricles
because they dont need to create a high force, and the blood pressure is lower as they are only pumping blood into the ventricles.
where as ventricles are pumping blood around a circuit.
what artery does the deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart leave from
aorta to the lungs
(pulmonary circulation)
what artery does the oxygenated blood from the left side of the heart leave from
pulmonary artery to the body (systemic circulation)
