Structure of the Eye Flashcards
Cornea
Front part of the eye. It is tough, transparent, and convex. The cornea refracts light as it enters the eye.
Iris
Pigmented (coloured) so light cannot pass through. It controls the amount of light which enters the eye.
Pupil
Dark hole in the middle of the eye. Light is refracted into the pupil. It is surrounded by the iris.
Lens
bi-convex, transparent, flexible disc attached to the ciliary muscles. The function is to focus light on the retina.
Retina
Layer of cells at the back of the eye which is sensitive to light. The retina receives light from the lens, and converts it to neural signals. It passes these signals to the optic nerve.
Optic nerve
Bundle of nerve fibres at the back of the eye.
The optic nerve carriers the nerve impulses (the images) to the brain, where they are turned the right way around.
Vitreous body (humour)
Holds spherical shape of the eye.
Sclera
The white of the eye.
