Reflection Flashcards
What is reflection?
reflection is when a ray of light hits a surface, and bounces off.
Incidence ray
A ray of light striking a surface.
Angle of incidence
The angle which the incident ray hits the surface.
Normal
The line drawn at 90 degrees, to measure the angle of incidence. (The angle of the incident ray)
Reflected ray
The ray of light that reflects off a surface/is reflected.
Angle of reflection
The angle of which the reflected ray is placed.
Periscopes (page 96) – remember we made them; how do they work? What did you see?
Periscopes allow you to see around corners, over obstacles, or under things without having to move. They are commonly used in submarines, and in war. Everything around you looks far away, and if you look at it from the outside, you look upside down.
Concave and convex mirrors page 98
Concave: Mirror curved inwards. When looking at a tablespoon, the “bowl” of the spoon is concave.
Convex: Mirror curved outwards. When looking at a tablespoon, the back of the spoon is convex.
What are plane mirrors?
Plane mirrors are flat, and are used as dressing room mirrors because the image is identical in size and position.
What are concave mirrors?
curved inwards and used as solar cookers, because they focus light onto a small area.
What are convex mirrors?
curved outwards and used as security mirrors in shops, because they give a wide field of view.
What is the angle of incidence equal to?
The angle of reflection.
How does light travel?
In straight lines.
