Parts of the Ear - Hearing Sounds Flashcards
Pinna
The outer ear - the Pinna receives sound waves.
Auditory canal
Sound waves are channeled through the auditory canal, and pass through to the ear drum. It is part of the middle ear.
Ear Drum
Sound waves are directed at the eardrum. The eardrum makes the three smallest bones in the body (the ossicles) vibrate.
Hammer, Anvil, Stirrup
The ossicles (3 smallest bones in the body) are the hammer, anvil, and stirrup. The bones vibrate, and send the vibrations to the cochlea. They are REALLY important, because they amplify sound.
Cochlea
The cochlea turns the sound waves into electrical signals/waves. The cochlea contains liquid, which moves in response to the vibrations.
Auditory nerves
The auditory nerves is a bundle of nerve fibres, which carries signals to the brain. They are important for balance.
Semicircular canals
Important for the balance of sound.
Eustachian tube
A small passageway which connects the throat, ear, and nose. It is important for controlling pressure.
How does sound travel? (through the ear)

Oval window
The oval window, is a membrane opening from the middle ear, to the cochlea (inner ear). Vibrations which travel through here come from the ossicles - 3 bones.
