structure of the earth + plate techtonics Flashcards
what is pangea
200 million years ago all the continents where joined together and formed a large landmass called pangea
where do constructive plate boundries occur
where two plates are moving away from eachother
what happens at constructive boundries
two plates are pulled away from eachother and magma rises to the surface through a small gap called a fissure this creates new land
what are the features of constructive boundries + example
-new land
-volcanos
-mid atlantic ridge
where do destructive plate boundries occur
where two plates collide
what happens at destructive plate boundries
convection currents cause two plates to collide the heavier plate sinks into the mantle and is destroyed the lighter plate buckles upwards creating fold montains and sometimes volcanoes
features of destructive plate boundries +one example
where do conservative plate boundries-fold mountains
-volcanoes
earthquakes
-andes mountains
where do conservative plate boundries occur
whre two plates move side by side
what happens at conservative plate boundries
two plates move side by side they can move in the opposite direction or the same direction but at different speeds sometimes the plates get stuck eventually they slip forward suddenly the energy released creates an earthquake
features +example of a conservative bountry
earthquake
san andes fault
what is the crust of the earth
the outside layer of the earth it is made up of rock it floats on the magma in the mantle
what is the mantle
surrounds the core it is very hot its made up of molten and semi-molten rock called magma
whats the earths core
made up of nickel and iron temperature is about 5000 it is divided into 2 parts the inner core and the outer core the inner core is a solid ball due to pressure the outer core is molten
