Structure of the Earth Flashcards
How many layers is the Earth made up off?
4 distinct layers.
Name the 4 layers.
The inner core.
The outer core.
The mantle.
The crust.
What is the inner core?
The centre and the hottest part of the Earth.
Immense heat energy its like the engine room of the Earth.
What is the inner core made up of?
Solid iron and nickel with temperatures of up to 5,500C.
What is the outer core?
Layer surrounding the inner core.
Extremely hot, temperatures similar to inner core.
What is the outer core made up of?
Liquid layer made from Iron and nickel.
What is the mantle?
The widest section of the Earth.
What is the mantles diameter?
Approximately 2,900 km.
What is the mantle made up of?
Semi-molten rock called magma
What is there in the upper part of the mantle?
The rock is hard.
What is there in the lower part of the mantle?
Rock is soft and it begins to melt.
What is the crust?
The outer layer of the Earth.
Thin layer between 0-60 km thick.
Solid layer in which we live upon.
Name the two different types of crust?
Continental crust.
Oceanic crust.
What does continental crust carry?
The land.
What does oceanic crust carry?
Water.
