Fold Mountains Formation Flashcards
Where do fold mountains form?
At destructive or collision plate boundaries.
What was there between the plates?
Depressions called Geosynclines.
What happened to the depressions?
They were filled with seas.
Rivers flowed into the seas.
What did the river flowing into the seas do?
They laid down thick layers of sediment like sand and mud.
What happened over millions of years?
The sediments compressed into hard rock.
What does sand turn into?
Stone.
What do shells turn into?
Limestone.
Why was the sediment compressed into hard rock?
By the weight of the sediments above.
The tectonic plates then do what?
Move towards each other forcing the sediment to be pushed upwards.
The pushed up sediment forms what?
Fold mountains with a series of anticlines and synclines.
What are anticlines?
Oldest rock occurs in the core of a anticline.
What are synclines?
Its a fold in which the youngest rock occurs in the core of a fold.
