structure of the brain Flashcards
3 sections of the brain
hindbrain, midbrain, forebrain
where is the hindbrain located
at the base of the brain near the back of the skull
what is the hindbrain made up of
brainstem (medulla) and cerebellum
what is and where is the medulla
it regulates life sustaining functions (heart rate, swallowing, breathing)
it is in the hindbrain
what does the cerebellum do
coordinates movement, balance and posture
what does the midbrain do
receives messages from all senses except for smell and sends them onto higher brain regions that deal with hearing, seeing, touch and taste
contains reticular information invloved in arousal, alertness and sleep cycles
what does the forebrain do
it is the largest and most developed part of the brain
it is seperated into 4 lobes
higher brain function such as thought and action
hypothalamus
tiggers our flight or fight response
cerebrum
divided into 2 hemispheres that is seperated by a deep groove
cerebral cortex
the outermost grey matter making up the cerebrum (squishy stuff)
thalamus
Your thalamus is your body’s information relay station
corpus callosum
a thick band of nerves connecting the left hemisphere to the right hemisphere
