Structure of the Atom Flashcards
Atom
the smallest part of an element
sub-atomic particles
particles that atoms are made up of
Protons
1 a.m.u
Located in the nucleus
Positive (+1 charge)
Electrons
1/1836 a.m.u
Located in the electron cloud surrounding the nucleus
Negative (-1 charge)
Neutron
1 a.m.u
Located in the nucleus
Neutral (0 charge)
a.m.u
atomic mass unit
The atomic number
of an atom is the number of protons in its nucleus
How do you find the number of electrons in an atom?
-Because the elements of the periodic table are neutral, the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom and the number of electrons in the electron cloud must be equal to ensure there is no charge.
Therefore the atomic number is equal to the number of protons in an atom.
Mass number
of an atom is the combined total of protons and neutrons in its nucleus
Isotopes
atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus
Ions
atoms that have lost or gained electrons
anions
elements which have gained electrons - negative charge
cations
elements which have lost electrons -,positive charge
Electron cloud is divided…
into energy levels or shells
The average mass of the atoms of an element
atomic mass
