Structure of Table Flashcards
1
Q
What does the periodic table have?
A
- Horizontal rows which are called periods
2
Q
Define ‘Periods’
A
- Row in the periodic table in which the atomic number increases one by one element to the next
3
Q
What are each rows like?
A
- The elements are arranged in terms of increasing atomic number
4
Q
What is ‘Period Number’?
A
- The same as the number of electron shells
5
Q
What happens as you go along a period?
A
- The properties of elements change
6
Q
What are columns of the periodic table called?
A
- Groups
7
Q
Elements in the same group have what?
A
- Similar properties, as they have the same number of electrons in their outer shell
8
Q
What is the pattern with Group Number?
A
- It is always equal to the number of electrons in their outer shell
- E.g. group 2 elements have 2 electrons in their outer shell
- Apart from Group 0, which have 8 electrons
9
Q
Describe what is seen as you go down the groups
A
- The properties of elements (reactivity) often gradually changes
