Chromatography Flashcards
1
Q
What is ‘Chromatography’ used for?
A
- It can be used to find out which colourings are in those substances
2
Q
What is the pattern in compounds?
A
- Some coloured compunds dissolve better in a solvent than others
- This means they have different solubillities
3
Q
Define ‘Solubiities’
A
- A measure of the amount of substance that will dissolve in a certain amount of solvent
4
Q
Define ‘Solvent’
A
- The liquid that dissolves the solute. Solute + solvent = solution
5
Q
What is a ‘chromotagram’?
A
- The paper with the separated components on it
6
Q
What is the Rf value?
A
- The distance the compound has risen divided by the distance the solvent has rise
7
Q
What happens if the the chromatography conditions are the same?
A
- Value of a particular compound does not change
8
Q
What does the Rf value do?
A
- Rf value can be used to identify compounds
