Ionic Bonds Flashcards
1
Q
Define ‘Ion’
A
- An atom or group of atoms with a positive or negative charge
2
Q
What do atoms of most elements have?
A
- Incomplete outer shells of electrons which means they can lose or gain electrons during chemical reactions
3
Q
So then what happens to non-metal atoms?
A
- Electrons are gained to form negatively charged ions called anions
4
Q
Why do non-metal atoms gain electrons?
A
- To complete their outer shell when they form ions
5
Q
Why do atoms transfer (lose or gain) electrons?
A
- To form positively or negatively charged atoms called ions
6
Q
What happens as there is an attraction of opposite charges?
A
- The ions are strongly attracted to one and other
