Mendeleev Flashcards
1
Q
Why did Mendeleev do what he did?
A
- So that elements with similar properties lined up in his table
2
Q
What did Mendeleev then do in 1869?
A
- Arranged 50 known elements according to their properties and the properties of their compounds
3
Q
What did his table look like?
A
- Mendeleev placed elements with similar chemical properties in the same vertical groups
4
Q
What did Mendeleev do differently to other scientists though?
A
- Left gaps for undiscovered elements.
- These gaps in table of elements then predicted the properties of undiscovered elements
5
Q
What has happened since these gaps have been left?
A
- New elements have been found which then fit into the gaps left into Mendeleev’s table
6
Q
What has also been discovered?
A
- A whole new group which have then been added to the table.
- This group is colourless gases which don’t react with much at all
