Structure of sperm Flashcards
What cell is sperm?
Sperm cells are gametes (sex cells) that are produced by the testicular organ in males.
How many chromosomes do cells carry?
23
What are the three parts of a sperm cell?
Head, body (midsection) and tail.
The nucleus of the cell contain the?
chromosomes
What does the tail do?
Allows the sperm to swim towards the egg.
What is the function of the body?
the body is packed with mitochondria to release energy needed to swim and also fertilize the egg.
What does acrosome contain and what is its function?
it contains enzymes which digest into the egg cell membrane
Give three structure adaptations for the sperm cell
- Head is pointy making it aerodynamic making it swim faster.
- Mitochondria produce energy which enables the sperm to swim faster.
- Tail allows to control the direction and enables it to swim quicker
What is the primary function of the sperm cell?
Its primary function is to pass on the necessary biological information to produce an new organism.
