What is the function of this system?
To produce ova and hold and protect growing embryo during pregnancy.

oviducts, ovaries, uterus, cervix and vagina
What is the function of the ovaries?
They produce the egg cells called ova.
They are also responsible for estrogen and progesterone secretion.

What are Ova?
They are the female gametes or sex cells.
What is another name for oviduct and what is its function?
Fallopian tube
Its function is to connect ovaries to the uterus. It also transports the ovum to the uterus. fertilisation also occurs in the oviducts.
What is the uterus?
It is a hollow organ, with extremely muscular walls to carry and protect the baby.
This is the place where the egg will develop into becoming an embryo.
It is where the baby will develop until birth.

the womb
What is the Cervix?
it is a ring of muscle at the lower end of the uterus.
What is the function of the Cervix?
It keeps the baby in place during pregnancy.
What is the endometrium?
It is the mucous membrane lining of the uterus.
What is the function of the endometrium?
it implants the developing foetus
What is the vagina?
it is a muscular tube that leads from the cervix to the outside of the women’s body.
What is the function of the vagina?
It acts as a canal for the penis to deliver sperm.
It also acts as the birth canal during birth.
Give 3 adaptations of the female reproductive system?
- the vagina is elastic and muscular to contain penis during intercourse.
- the cervix can tightly close to protect the uterus.
- Uterus has thick, blood-rich lining, ready for implantation of fertilised egg.
