Structure Of Grassland Ecosystem Flashcards
Primary producers:
Photosynthesising plants; grasses and forbs.
Grasslands are
Grazing ecosystems.
Primary consumers:
Herbivores; bison, antelope and domestic grazing stock.
Secondary & Tertiary consumers:
Predators; lions, foxes, jaguar.
Detritivores:
Dung beetles, millipedes, earthworms.
Decomposers:
Fungi & bacteria.
The grassland ecosystem differs based on the
Relative importance of the different components in the energy budget.
Grazing ecosystems: Most of the NPP is
Eaten by herbivores, the rest enters the detritus food chain when plants die. Very little primary production goes into storage as biomass or dead organic matter.
Storage ecosystems: a large proportion of
Primary production ends up being stored.
Detritus ecosystems:
Less is eaten, more ends up as detritus.
