Structure of cartilage Flashcards
1
Q
What is the matrix composed of?
A
- protein fibres(collagen)
- protein-carbohydrate complex(chondrin)
2
Q
What are chondrocytes?
A
Mature chondroblast cells
3
Q
What are the three types of cartilage?
A
Hyaline, Elastic and Fibro
4
Q
What is hyaline cartilage?
A
- contains closely packed collagen fibres throughout the matrix
- this gives cartilage strength and flexibility
- eg. trachea, bronchi
5
Q
What is elastic cartilage?
A
- contains visible elastic fibres and less packed collagen
- provides flexible elastic support
- eg. external ear
6
Q
What is fibrocartilage?
A
- contains bundles of thick collagen fibres not as compacted
- found in places were weight is supported
- eg. Vertebrae, knee joint
7
Q
What are chondroblasts?
A
They secrete a matrix and surrounds itself in it
