Q

What are ball-and-socket joints and give examples

A
  • spherical head of bone fits into cup-like cavity of other bone
  • allows full range of movement
  • eg. humerus and scapula

Q

What are hinge joints and give examples

A
  • one convex surface of bone fits on concave surface of other bone
  • allows movement in only one plane
  • eg. ulna and humerus

Q

What are pivot joints and give examples

A
  • rounded end of bone fits to the ring of another bone
  • allows only rotation movement
  • eg. radius and ulna

Q

What are gliding joints and give examples

A
  • allow movement in any direction in a side-to-side or back-and-forth motion
  • restricted only by ligaments or bony processes surrounding
  • eg. between carpal bones

Q

What are saddle joints and give examples

A
  • both bones that fit are saddle-shaped(concave in one direction and convex in other)
  • allows both side-to-side and back-and-forth motion
  • eg. carpals and metacarpals

Q

What are condyloid joints and give examples

A
  • one slightly convex bone fits other slightly concave bone
  • allows movement in only two directions
  • eg. metacarpals and phalanges
