Structure of animal viruses Flashcards
What is the size of viruses?
tiny-most not visible under light microscope
What is the genetic material of animal viruses?
nucleic acids (RNA or DNA) amount varies
it will RNA or DNA not both as genetic material
What are the components of a virus?
Capsid-capsomers
Envelope- F & M proteins
What forms a capsid?
protein subunits called structural units or capsomers.
what is the function of the capsid?
Protects the enclosed nucleic acid
What are the different types of capsids?
complex-(poxvirus)
icosahedral- (Solid w/ 20 triangular faces, 12 vertices, 2, 3, 5 fold symmetry)
helical-helical morphology
Where is the envelope?
surrounds nucleocapsid
What is the envelope formed from?
modified host cellular membrane.
Contains host derived phospholipid bilayer
virus-derived proteins and glycoproteins-for attachment and viral fusion
What are Matrix (M) proteins?
found associated with the inner layer of the envelope. Aid in viral structure. Help gives structure to membrane
What are fusion (F) proteins?
are found on the envelope surface, they cause viral membranes to fuse with cellular membranes. – helps virus enter the host cell
Naked virus or enveloped virus more susceptible to disinfectants?
Enveloped is more susceptible to disinfectants
because disinfectants strip away proteins and lipids that are essential for the virus to function
