structure of an atom Flashcards
what is an atom
Smallest unit of matter
the smallest particle that has the same properties of its element
“Building blocks of matter”
how many parts does an atom have
2; the nucleus and electrons
what is the a nucleus of an atom and what is it made of
the central core of an atom; protons and neutrons
proton, electrons, and neutron electric charges
protons have positive charge
electrons have negative charge
neutrons have no charge, they’re neutral
how to determine how many protons, electrons, and neutrons
there are the same amount of protons and electrons, making their charges cancel each other out
what are isotopes
atoms of an element that have the same amount of protons but different amount of neutrons
isotopes with more neutrons are heavier and those with less are lighter
isotope parts
element symbol-num., identifies the different types of isotopes (the number is its mass number)
EXAMPLE: chlorine-37
mass number goes on the upper left of the element symbol
atomic number goes on the lower left
How to get the mass number
By adding the protons and neutrons
how to get the amount of neutrons
subtracting the mass number with its atomic number
