Matter Flashcards
How is the quantity of matter described and why?
By mass, because mass isn’t affected by environmental factors and others that can cause it to become unreliable.
Five main stages of matter
Solid Liquid Gas Plasma Bose-Einstein condensate (extremely cold)
What is matter made of
Molecules ( smallest part of a substance and still holds properties and composition of that substance.)
Properties of solid matter
occupies a Definite space
has Definite shape
Properties of liquid matter
Occupies definite space
has no definite shape
Conforms to the shape of space it occupies
Properties of gas
Occupies any and fills all space available
no definite shape
Changes it can go under
Physical changes (appearance is changed but no new substance is made)
Chemical Change (A new substance is produced)
Temperate change
RISE IN TEMP
solid + heat = liquid
liquid + heat = gas
FALL IN TEMP
Vapor(gas) - heat = liquid (CONDESATION)
Liquid - heat = solid
sublimation
solid directly turns into gas
deposition
gas directly into solid
Pure Substance
has definite or constant composition
can either be an element or compound
Mixture
physical combinations of pure substances
separated by physical means
can be heterogeneous (varies) or homogeneous (relatively the same)
element
composed of atoms (smallest part of an element) that contain the same properties of that element
Compound
made up of two or more elements; separated by chemical changes
