What do salivary glands do
pour saliva into the mouth, contains enzymes known as amylases which begin digestion of carbohydrates
what does the oesophagus do
transports food from back of the mouth to the stomach in the abdomen.
what does the stomach do
receives food from the mouth by the oesophagus, stomach empties chyme in spurts into duodenum through a thick ring muscle
what does the duodenum do
concerned with digestion and is helped by the liver and the pancreas
what does the ileum do
Mainly concerned with the absorption of fully digested food
what does the colon do
removes water and some nutrients from partially digested food
what does the liver do
produces bile
removes glucose and other sugars from the blood and converts them into glycogen for storage
what does the pancreas do
secretes enzyme rich pancreatic juice and alkaline salts.
makes hormones like insulin which is needed to metabolise glucose and glucagon.
ulcers
can occur in mouth, stomach and duodenum
what is hepatitis
inflammation of the liver and can be caused by viruses or chemical substances including alcohol.
what is coeliac disease
autoimmune disease and runs in families. it is an intolerance to gluten which is a protein found in wheat and other cereals. This causes an immune response which can cause weight loss, vitamin deficiencies and diarrhoea.
