homeostasis Flashcards
homeostasis
the process of maintaining a constant internal environment despite external changes
negative feedback (homeostasis)
happens when important variable deviates from normal range or limit
response is produced to counteract the deviation
low body temperature (homeostasis)
hypothalamus activates warming mechanism
blood vessels constrict so blood is diverted to deeper tissue
muscles contract causing you to shiver
body temp increases
high body temperature (homeostasis)
hypothalamus activates cooling mechanism
blood vessels dilate and capillaries fill with warm blood
sweat glands produce sweat
body temp decreases
high blood sugar (homeostasis)
high blood sugar promotes insulin release
pancreas produces insulin
this stimulates glycogen formation through liver
and glucose uptake from blood
lowers blood sugar
low blood sugar (homeostasis)
low blood sugar promotes glucagon release
pancreas produces glucagon
stimulates glycogen breakdown through liver
rises blood sugar
