Structure and properties of materials Flashcards
What is the appearance of elements and compounds?
uniform
What is the appearance of mixture?
non-uniform
What is the composition of elements and compuonds?
fixed
What is the composition of mixture?
not fixed
Does element and compound have a symbol/formula?
yes
Does mixture have a symbol/formula?
no
Is element found in periodic table?
yes
Is compound and mixture found in periodic table?
no
What are the properties of elements?
-Fixed boiling point and melting point
-cannot be separated by physical means
-single spot in chromatogram
What are the properties of compound?
-fixed boiling and melting point
-cannot be separated by physical means
-single spot in chromatogram
What are the properties of mixture?
-no fixed boiling and melting point
-can be separated by physical means
-more than 1 spot in the chromatogram
What is the physical properties of metal?
Shiny, good electrical and heat conductor, ductile and malleable, high melting and boiling point, high density
What is an alloy?
Alloy is a mixture of metal with another element
Why is alloy stronger than pure metal?
Alloy is stronger and harder than pure metal because the different sizes atoms disrupt the orderly arrangement of the metal atoms, making layers of atoms difficult to slide over one another
