Acids and bases chemistry Flashcards
What is the formula of the ion present in all acids?
Hydrogen ion, H+
What is the formula of the ion present in all alkalis?
hydroxide ion, OH-
What is the formula for hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and sulfuric acid?
HCl, HNO3, H2SO4
What is the formula for sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide and ammonium hydroxide?
NaOH, Ca(OH)2, NH4OH
What are the properties of acids?
Sour and corrosive
What are the properties of alkalis?
Bitter and caustic
What are the chemical properties of acids/ acids reactions?
- Acid + Active metal –> salt + hydrogen
- Acid + Base –> salt + water
- Acid + Carbonate –> salt + water + carbon dioxide
What are the chemical properties of bases/ bases reaction?
- Acid + base –> salt + water
- Alkali + ammonium salt –> salt + water + ammonia
- Alkali + salt –> salt + base
What are bases?
-generally metal oxides or hydroxides
-generally insoluble in water
Is alkali a soluble base?
yes
What is neutralization
acid reacting with bases/alkali to form the neutral water
What is Basic oxides?
-metal oxide
-CaO, MgO, CuO, FeO
- react only with acids to form salt + water
What is Amphoteric oxide?
-metal oxide
-zinc oxide (ZnO), Aluminium oxide (Al2O3), Lead oxide (PbO)
- reacts with both acid and alkalis to form salt + water
What is neutral oxide?
-non-metal oxide
-Carbon monoxide (CO), Nitrogen oxide (NO), Hydrogen oxide (H2O)
-does not react with acids or alkali
What is Acidic oxide?
-non-metal
-CO2, NO2, SO2
-react with bases to form salt and water
