Structure and Function of the Eye (FWONG) Flashcards
What do you call the space where the eye ball is between the upper and lower eye lids
palpebral fissure
what do you call the two tapering ends of the eye lids where the upper and lower eye lids meet
lateral and medial canthus
What is the black dot? what is the coloured part around the black dot? what is the white bit of the eye
Black dot: pupil
Coloured part: iris
White part: sclera
What is the caruncle
the red bit of ‘flesh’ near the medial canthus
What do you call the margin between the cornea (which is on top of the iris) and the sclera (white bit)
limbus
what is the tear sac also called
lacrimal sac
What is superficial above the cornea and how many layers does this structure have
tear film is above the cornea
it has 3 layers:
Oily, water, mucinous layer (from superficial to deep)
What fluid is the majority of the eye ball filled with
vitreous humour (not to be confused with aqueous humour which is present in the anterior and posterior chamber)
What is continuous with the retina
optic nerve
What are the 3 layers of the eye
from superficial to deep
Sclera - connective tissue, good for support. Hard, tough and opaque
Choroid- highly vascularised layer with a lot of blood vessels. Pigmented as well
Retina- continuous with optic nerve. Requires a lot of energy to function and so it needs the blood from the choroid layer
