Structure And Function Of An Organelle Flashcards
What is the structure of the cell membrane?
the structure is double layered (made up of lipids and proteins)
What is the structure of cytoplasm
The structure is think + jelly like, fill up empty space between the nucleus and cell membrane.
What is the structure of cytosol
The liquid part of the cytoplasm, 75-90% water, contains salts and carbohydrates, fats and proteins suspend.
What is the structure of the nucleus
It is the largest organelle, it is oval or spherical shaped, has a membrane (nuclear membrane), pores (nuclear pores) and a nucleolus
What is the structure of ribosomes
they are small and spherical, can be either free or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the structure of the endoplasmic reticulum (er)
They are pairs of parallel membranes, can be either rough (rough endoplasmic reticulum, RER) or smooth (smooth endoplasmic reticulum, SER). The RER has ribosomes where as SER has no ribosomes
What is the structure of the golgi body
The golgi body is flattened membranes stacked on top of one another, find near the nucleus and the endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the structure of lysosomes
small spheres, bound by a membrane
What is the structure of the mitochondria
the mitochondria is spherical or elongated, has a double membrane and has many folds (to increase surface area)
What is the structure of cilia and flagella
Cilia is short and hair like
Flagella is long and there is only a few
What is the structure of the cytoskeleton
framework of protein fibers
- microtubules and microfilaments
What is the structure of centrioles
pairs of cynical structures, usually near the nucleus.
What is the function of the cell membrane
separates the inside of the cell from the outside, controls what enters and exits.
What is the function of cytoplasm
acts as a shock absorber, supports and suspends the organelles
What is the function of cytosol
location of metabolic reations, controls osmotic pressure, there is chemical flow
What is the function of the Nuclues
controls the structure and function of the entire cell, it contains DNA ( deoxyribonucleic acid)
What is the function of ribosomes
joins amino acids to make proteins
What is the function of the Endoplasmic reticulum
a surface for chemical reactions, stores and transports molecules
What is the function of the Golgi body
modify and package proteins to be secreted from the cell, forms sacs of liquid with proteins (vesicles)
What is the function of lysosomes
contains digestive enzymes, break down old organelles
What is the function of the Mitochondria
the site of cellular respiration
What is the function of cilia and flagella
cilia is to move substances over/across the cell
Flagella is to move the entire cell
What is the function of the Cytoskeleton
Give the cell it’s shape, moves material and organelles, holds organelles in place (cytoplasm)
What is the function of centrioles
assist in cellular respiration
