Structure and Formation of Cells Flashcards
What does an animal cell consist of?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, ribosomes, and mitochondria.
What does a plant cell consist of?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, ribosomes, mitochondria, and a vacuole.
What is the difference between a plant cell and an animal cell?
Plants have chloroplasts, a cell wall and a vacuole.
What is the basic structure of a bacterial cell?
Cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, nucleoid (DNA strand) and a plasmid.
What are plasmids?
Chromosomal material that are found in bacteria cells.
What do plasmids have the ability to do?
Plasmids have the ability to replicate.
What enlarges the surface area of a cell wall in bacteria cells?
An appendage enlarges the surface area of a cell wall.
What is the main component in the plant cell wall?
Cellulose
What is cell division essential for?
Allows cells to grow and repair.
What is the result of cell division in unicellular organisms?
When a unicellular organism divides a new organism if formed.
What is the result of cell division in a multicellular organism?
When a multicellular organism divides the organism grows.
What is cell division controlled by?
The nucleus.
What does the nucleus contain?
The nucleus contains chromosomes.
Describe the process of Mitosis?
- Chromosomes become shorter and thicker * Chromosomes them=n line up on the equator of the cell, the spindle fibres form and attach to each chromosome *the chromosomes split in two and the chromatids are pulled by the spindle fibres to each poles of the cell * Nuclear membrane forms around the two newly formed clumps of chromatids * Cytoplasm divides * as the cell forms the chromatids double to produce a chromosome *Two daughter cells are identical to the mother cell.
What is chromosome complement?
The number of chromosomes found in the nucleus of an organism.
