cranial
towards the head
caudal
towards the feet
medial
towards the middle/midline
later
towards the side of the body
superficial
on or near the surface of the body
deep
injury to internal organs
proximal
toward the point of attachment to the body or towards the trunk of the body
what abdominal regions are on either side of the hypogastric region?
the left and right iliac region
what region is on either side of the epigastric region?
the left and right hypochondriac region
what region is located on either side of the umbilical region?
the left and right lumbar region
what organs are in the cranial cavity?
the brain
what organs are in the thoracic/ventral cavity?
the heart, lungs, and esophagus
what organs are in the abdominal cavity?
stomach, liver, the intestines, the pancreas, and gall bladder
what organs are in the pelvic cavity?
the bladder and reproductive organs
what organ can be found in the dorsal/spinal cavity?
the spinal cord
what connective tissue stores fat?
adipose tissues
what body plane divides the body into top and bottom halves?
transverse
the mid sagittal plane divides the body into?
equal right and left halves
what body plane divides the body into anterior and posterior portions?
coronal
the outer part of a serous membrane that lines the cavity is?
parietal
the inner part of the serous membrane that lines next to the organ is?
visceral
what type of serous membrane lines the abdominal cavity?
peritoneal
what is formed when cells are grouped because they are similar in shape, size, structure, and function?
tissue
what body plane divides the body into superior and inferior portions?
transversal
what is a tissue?
cells that are grouped together by size shape and function
name the 4 types of tissues:
epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue
what are the two types of epithelial tissue?
skin and membrane
what does epithelial tissue do?
protects the body by covering internal and external surfaces, and produces secretions
what does skin do?
it covers the outside of the body
what do membranes do?
two thin layers of tissue that join together, and may secrete a fluid
what are the four types of connective tissue?
cartilage, adipose, tendons and ligaments
what is cartilage?
firm, flexible support of the embryonic skeleton and part of the adult skeleton
what is adipose?
fat cells
what are tendons?
white bands of connective tissue that connect skeletal muscles to bone
what are ligaments?
strong, flexible bands of connective tissue that firmly hold bones together at the joints
what is connective tissue?
a type of tissue that supports and connects organs and tissues
what are the three types of muscle tissue?
skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle tissue
what is muscle tissue?
a type of tissue that contracts to move body parts
which type of muscle tissue is striated, involuntary, and contracts the heart?
cardiac muscle tissue
which type of muscle tissue is striated, voluntary, and attached to the skeleton?
skeletal muscle tissue
which type of muscle tissue is non striated, involuntary, and provides movement in various body systems?
smooth muscle tissue
what is nervous tissue?
a type of tissue that reacts to stimulation and conducts an impulse
what are the two types of membranes?
mucous and serous
what are the two types of serous membranes?
partial and visceral
