Strokes Flashcards
What are the main symptoms of a stroke?
Facial drooping on one side, paralysis of one side of the body, headaches, slurred speech, decreased awareness/finding it hard to understand other people, unconsciousness, dizziness, loss of balance
Name the two different types of stroke.
Haemorrhagic and ischaemic
What is a stroke?
A cerebrovascular accident
What can increase the risk of a haemorrhagic stroke?
Lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, increased stress, hypertension (high bp), excessive alcohol intake
What can increase the risk of a ischaemic stroke?
Smoking, obesity, raised cholesterol levels, diabetes, hypertension (high bp), excessive alcohol intake
What happens during an ischaemic stroke?
The blood supply to the brain is cut off due to a blood clot. The brain then becomes starved of blood and oxygen causing a part of the brain to begin to die.
What happens during a haemorrhagic stroke?
A weakened blood vessel supplying to the brain bursts. This increases the pressure between the brain and skull.
